The Women in Data Science (WiDS) initiative aims to inspire and educate data scientists worldwide, regardless of gender, and to support women in the field.
WiDS started as a conference at Stanford in November 2015. Now, WiDS includes a global conference, with approximately 150+ regional events worldwide; a datathon, encouraging participants to hone their skills using a social impact challenge; and a podcast, featuring leaders in the field talking about their work, their journeys, and lessons learned.
WiDS Malta is an independent event organized by Data Science Malta to coincide with the annual Global Women in Data Science (WiDS) Conference held at Stanford University and an estimated 150+ locations worldwide. All genders are invited to attend WiDS regional events, which features outstanding women doing outstanding work.
Fran Moisa is the Director of NichollsMoisa and IGaming Elite in Malta. An accomplished headhunter with over 10 years experience in talent driven and emerging markets across EMEA, she is a strong advocate of implementing scientifically backed talent assessment and retention methods to help businesses and professional achieve sustainable, long term results.
Viktoria Soltesz is the founder of PSP Angels, the well-known payment brokerage firm, which helps online businesses to find their best payment and banking solution - for free. (www.pspangels.com) Viktoria has over 13 years experience with high risk industries, working as a Chief Financial Officer with various Fintech & E-commerce companies, and running her own Finance and Tax Consultancy Firm in Cyprus for over 10 years. She is an expert when it comes to startup financing, financial planning and payment solutions. She used to lecture at the University of West London and is a regular speaker at blockchain, fintech and investment conferences.
Jackie Mallia obtained a Doctor of Laws at the University of Malta and proceeded to obtain a master’s degree in technology law from Queen Mary, University of London. She specialises in the provision of legal support to clients within the fields of information technology and intellectual property. She has extensive experience in advising both the private and the public sector, having assisted private clients in numerous corporate matters, as well as various governments and authorities within and outside the European Union, to formulate and draft legislative frameworks in her fields of expertise. Her current focus is on artificial intelligence (‘AI’) and other disruptive technologies and she is one of the experts appointed to the Malta.AI Task Force, heading the Legal and Ethics Working Group. She has recently joined International Management Services Limited (IMS) to create IMS Innovate, which will provide support services to professionals, investors and entities within the sectors of innovative technology (including AI and blockchain), eSports and film.
Dana Farrugia is the CEO of Tech.mt, a foundation established in partnership between the Government of Malta and The Malta Chamber of Commerce to promote the National strategy for Technology & Innovation. She is engaged in ensuring sector growth for technology and innovation, primarily focusing on AI, blockchain, IOT, cloud services, data analytics, software development, robotics, cyber security and research on innovative solutions. Dana Farrugia has worked in the telecoms industry for fourteen years, mainly shaping the mobile, fixed, internet, tv, fiber and IP networks in Malta. She has also worked at the Ministry for the Economy, Investment and Small Businesses for six years where she has developed an in-depth understanding of the needs of different local industries and also gained a sound exposure on the potential of various international markets. Dana Farrugia is also a Director at Malta Enterprise and at the Malta Start-up Foundation.
Lara Selvagi is highly experienced and passionate about insight-led marketing, pricing launches and new business planning. She is respected for deep knowledge of numerical analyzing and insight-led decision making which are exemplified with contributions within Telecoms and Global Retail and Wholesale. Her work offers key influence through commercial analytics, complex data analysis, KPI visualization and transforming big data into actionable insights, decisions and strategies for improved customer focus, cost control and market agility.
Annalise Attard currently holds the role of Customer Insights Analyst at Melita Ltd. and is responsible for building predictive models that provide insights into customer behaviour and possible future behaviour.
Before starting her journey as an analyst, Annalise spent two years at a local pharmaceutical company as a Planning Officer. Her daily tasks revolved around optimising manufacturing schedules which involved keeping an eye on the process from start to finish, and the launching of new products. After two successful years in Pharma, Annalise made the move into the fast-moving world of telecommunications. Her first role within Melita was an Operations Executive within Customer Care. One of her proudest moments was when she used analytics to reduce not only the amount of customer complaints but to identify the reason why a customer would complain in the first place allowing the company to tackle issues at their core.Annalise completed her Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Mathematic and Statistics and Operations Research with a second upper classification. She is currently reading for her Masters in Statistics with the University of Malta where she is specialising in regularisation regression and classification. In her free time, Annalise enjoys reading, going to the gym and meeting friends for coffee.
Beata Young is the founder of #WomenOnIT, a grassroots organization devoted to tech diversity, with official launch by Minister for Digital Economy Silvio Schembri. After coming to Malta in 2017 she quickly established herself as a leading digital strategist, advising the government eSkills Foundation, mentoring Celuna (winner of 2018 JAYE Startup competition) and judging JAYE Young Entrepreneurs. Having worked with major global brands like Facebook, GoDaddy through her previous initiatives across the world, Beata combines the best of different sectors in innovative, attention grabbing yet durable business collaborations based on the Cindy Gallop maxim:
Shared values+shared actions=shared profit. Beata’s goal remains breaking down the barriers that prevent so many people, especially women, from reaching their full potential. Her belief in the power of diversity to supercharge innovation across the global economy has been a driving factor for her startup ecosystem Mission ToRun and other organizations from Tokyo via Sydney to Montreal. Beata has been a distinguished speaker at numerous international industry events, her recent speech made her #PugIT go viral.
Denise De Gaetano is an A.I. and Blockchain specialist with more than 12 years of experience working within various industries. Her skills and expertise have helped with the transformation of data investments into actionable business results through the visioning and implementation of Big Data, Web Presence, Content Publishing, and Enterprise Search solutions. She was also involved in business strategies providing a superior engagement experience through a combination of business acumen, intellectual curiosity, a collaborative work style, and strong partnerships with award-winning vendors.

Tech.mt aims to position Malta as a quality, creative, tech-savvy country, and promote Malta as a suitable set-up for foreign direct investment, whilst also promoting the local technological industries abroad.

To encourage human resources and aid growth in the Technology, Tech.mt plans to partner with Education Institutions to position Malta as a vibrant location for tech talent and in turn attract human capital to our shores. Furthermore, Tech.mt is working closely with academic institutions to better understand how the local STEM and IT curricula can be made more attractive to be chosen as the basis for a career in technology. We also need to consider new areas of specialisation revolving around digital & creative technology.
Tech.mt is also focusing its energies on engaging the youth community. Youths are major stakeholders who are constantly using digital technology thus, encouraging youth participation in the transformation of the digital economy is crucial.

The eSkills Malta Foundation is a National Coalition made up of various representatives from Government, industry and education, who can contribute to the increase in digital skills and the development of the IT profession and help us with the following mandates:
to advise Government and relevant stakeholders on matters related to eSkills policies;
to contribute to the expansion of ICT educational programmes and related formative initiatives;
to lead an ICT professionalism development programme;
to instigate further reform in the ICT educational offerings and contribute to capacity-building of the ICT education community; and finally to
to champion campaigns and promote the Maltese eSkills potential locally and internationally.
