Halloween Coding Carnival

A themed coding challenge where learners design, build and debug their own interactive program.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

What you will build

By the end of this programme, the learner will have created a complete themed coding challenge that responds to user choices and produces a working result. The emphasis is on understanding how the technology works, applying it independently and being able to explain the finished result.

Step-by-step programme

01

Plan the challenge

Define what the program should do, what inputs it needs and what the user should experience.

02

Build the core logic

Use variables, input/output and decisions to create the main behaviour of the program.

03

Add repetition and structure

Use loops, functions or reusable blocks to make the code more efficient and easier to understand.

04

Test and debug

Run the program, identify errors, trace the logic and improve the behaviour.

05

Final challenge

Complete an independent themed extension that combines the concepts learned during the session.

What you will learn

  • Understand how a program moves from idea to algorithm to code.
  • Use variables, decisions, loops and functions appropriately.
  • Test code systematically and correct common errors.
  • Explain how the finished program works.

How the programme is taught

The tutor introduces each concept, demonstrates the technique, then gives the learner time to apply it. The learner is expected to make decisions, test the work and troubleshoot problems rather than simply follow a finished solution. Technical depth is adapted to the learner's starting point while keeping the final project outcome clear.

Who this programme is for

This programme is designed for learners who want a focused seasonal project in coding. Introductory versions do not require previous experience; where a learner already has experience, the tutor can increase the technical complexity of the final challenge.

What you need

A computer with a reliable internet connection is required for online delivery. Any specialist software, browser tools or equipment requirements are confirmed before the programme begins.
